Introduction

Indian passport holders who intend to spend an extended amount of time in a foreign country must obtain a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC). If an Indian passport holder seeks residence status, employment, a long-term visa, or immigration in a foreign country, they will have to apply for a police clearance certificate in their home country. Note that a tourist visa does not require a PCC. Students who intend to study in a foreign country for an extended period must obtain a Police Clearance Certificate.


Indian students seeking to pursue their studies in some of the European & Oceanic countries are required to furnish an authentic Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) that is no more than six months old from the date of issuance in conjunction with their application for a Study Visa.

Online Application Process For Police Clearance Certificate

Step 1: Applicants must ‘Register’ at the Passport Seva Online Portal.

Step 2: Log in to the Passport Seva Online Portal using the Login ID you created in Step 1.

Step 3: Select the “Apply for Police Clearance Certificate” link.

Step 4: Fill out and submit the form with the relevant information.

Step 5: To make an appointment, click the “Pay and Schedule Appointment” link on the “View Saved/Submitted Applications” screen. Booking appointments at every PSK/POPSK/PO now requires online payment. Online payments can be done using any of the following methods:
Credit/debit cards (MasterCard and Visa) Internet Banking (State Bank of India, Associate Banks, and Other Banks) SBI bank challan

Step 6: Select the “Print Application Receipt” option to print the application receipt with the Application Reference Number (ARN)/Appointment Number. Note that carrying a printout of the Application Receipt is no longer required. An SMS with your appointment information is also acceptable as proof of appointment during your visit to the Passport Office.

Step 7: Take your original documents and an appointment to the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/Regional Passport Office (RPO).

Important Note:

  • You can only visit Passport Seva Kendra without an appointment in medical emergencies or situations that have been pre-approved.

  • Bring a recent passport-sized picture (4.5 x 3.5 cm) with a white background if you are applying for a minor (under 4 years old).

  • If the person doesn’t go to the Passport Seva Kendra within 90 days of submitting the online form, they will need to resubmit the form.

Documents Required For PCC

In this section, we will go over the documentation required for PCC in depth. 

  1. Passport: Provide a self-attested photocopy of the first and last two pages, including the observation page (if applicable) and ECR/Non-ECR page.

  2. Application Receipt: Application receipt received from Passport seva online portal. Even SMS received from Passport seva portal can work.

  3. Current Address Proof:
  • Electricity and phone bills
  • Water bill
  • Aadhaar Card and Voter ID/Election Commission Photo identification card
  • Bank account details: Passbook (picture) for your current bank account
  • Rental Agreement: The landlord must keep the Rent Agreement in the tenant’s name for longer than a year.The Rent Agreement should be registered under Section 17 of the Registration Act of 1908.
  • Spouse’s passport: A passport copy of your spouse will work; however, the applicant’s current address must match the spouse’s current residence. The first and last pages of the passport contain family information, including the applicant’s name as the spouse of the passport holder.
  • Certificate issued by the employer of notable companies on their letterhead.
  • Minors must have a copy of their parent’s passport.

In addition to the above specified documents, you will also need:

  • Documentary evidence for the purpose of obtaining the police clearance certificate, viz., an employment contract, offer letter from overseas university, etc.
  • Declaration of sponsorship from the sponsor (for dependent family members)

PCC Processing Time

People in India can only get PCC after getting a “clear certificate” from the police. You can check your PCC status on the official website of the Passport Seva Kendra. This verification process could take anywhere from 7 to 21 business days. The Police Verification papers scrutiny process can be different depending on the police station and the application.
