Hungary may not be a well-known study destination like USA, UK, however, it is gradually & quietly making its way to win the hearts & minds of students across the globe. Hungarian universities are seeing a large number of students enrolling for courses that are taught in various languages, the most popular being English. Hungary is treading the right path to become an education hub since studying in Hungary is slowly becoming desirable amongst international students.

Four Universities in Hungary have made it to the QS World University rankings and every year, the institutions are raising the bar for education standards. The universities adhere to a Bologna Process to make the education in Hungary compatible with that of other European countries. Students earn bachelor, followed by a Master’s degree and ultimately a doctorate.

Hungary is also very popular for its nightlife. Wine is their specialty and claimed not to be found anywhere else. The higher education system in Hungary exhibits academic excellence for more than 650 years. The first university in Hungary was founded in 1367 in the southern region of the country. Today, Hungary has 65 higher education institutions, varying from minor universities of applied sciences to top research universities. The programs are available at bachelor, master & doctoral levels following the Bologna system of education. Although the degree programs are independent, some programs are integrated wherein the bachelor & master levels are unified – architecture, dentistry, law, medicine, and veterinary medicine. Such programs award 300 to 360 credits to students on completion and last for 5 to 6 years. For a doctoral program, one has to complete 240 credits within 4 years of study. A final examination is conducted at the end of the fourth semester. Post a successful examination, the last 2 years of the doctoral program are dedicated to research & writing dissertation, which can be expanded with one more year.

The tuition fees you pay will depend on where you choose to study and at what level. If you are from an EU country, you may be able to apply for a state-funded place. This will be under the same system as Hungarian citizens, so applications may be competitive. International students may also be eligible for a scholarship provided by the Hungarian government. On average, you should expect to pay between $5,500/€4,900 and $15,000/€13,200 per year. You should also expect to pay application/examination fees of around $500/€440.

Living costs will depend on where you choose to live in Hungary. If you live in a bigger city, it will cost more than a smaller city or town. On average, you should budget for between $7,200/€6,400 and $10,500/€9,300 per year. This accounts for accommodation, groceries, travel and any other necessary expenses. Another living cost that international students need to consider is health insurance. If you are an EHIC card holder, you will be able to access the same healthcare as Hungarian citizens, but will incur some costs. If you are studying on a governmental scholarship, you might be able to apply for a social security card (TAJ card). This will allow you to access most public healthcare for free. If neither of these apply, you will need to purchase a health insurance policy. Some institutions offer health insurance policies, but you are able to purchase a private policy also.
